Diocese: Chichester
Chancellor:  Hill

Erection of a memorial on the grave of petitioner’s late husband. Memorial did not comply with churchyard regulations although supported by PCC and incumbent. DAC had no objection to the family’s wanting a design alluding to the deceased’s love of books but not happy with the actual design of a closed book chosen from a stonemason’s catalogue, preferring a bespoke design from a craftsman. DAC objected to the use of deceased’s nickname and the words Dad and Grandad to which Chancellor disagrees. Also objection to the inscription “taken suddenly too soon” and “simply the best” Chancellor would permit the erection of memorial in form of closed book and use of nickname, but not the two inscriptions above, therefore petition fails although an amended or modified proposal would find favour.
