Diocese: Chichester
Chancellor: Hill

Petitioner wishes to erect a headstone over the grave of her late mother but as the inscription falls outside that permitted by the Churchyard Regulations the incumbent of St Mary’s was unable to sanction it and advised petitioner to seek a faculty. Wording refers to the deceased as “Mummy” a form of address limited to the deceased’s children but not necessarily other relatives and friends therefore appearing exclusive rather than inclusive. The inscription also mentions a man’s name but does not indicate who he is (presumably husband of the deceased) therefore rendering the term “Mummy” inaccurate. Chancellor suggests a more appropriate and inclusive inscription which would embrace successive generations but agrees to the word “Mummy” if, after reflection and consultation with her family, the petitioner considers that no other wording will suffice.
